The McInerney School was founded in 1989 as a continuation of the May Kelly School, Swindon,  which Mike took over upon her retirement. The School expanded in 1995 to the Newbury and Thatcham areas and more recently in 2003 to Calcot near  Reading. The McInerney School of Irish Dancing teaches Solo Step and Ceili Dancing to children from the age of 5 years.

The school is primarily taught by Mike McInerney who is a qualified Teacher and Adjudicator within the An Coimisiún le Rincí Gaelach, organisation. Since 1995 His Daughter Claire McInerney, who has reached World Championship standard as a dancer , has also taken a lead teaching and coaching role within the School.

“The McInerney School of Irish Dance aims, by working within a team structure, to provide students the opportunity to gain recognition within a competitive environment, to grow in confidence and to fulfill the maximum of their own potential”.

The School is affiliated to An Coimisiún le Rincí Gaelach, and is a member of the South East Regional Council within that organisation. To our knowledge we are the only Coimisiún school to have a presence in the County of Berkshire.

Mike McInerney has a pedigree in Irish Dancing starting when he was 6 years of age with the May Kelly School, Mike achieved significant successes in both local, regional and especially in the larger London based competitions.  The McInerney School of Irish Dance was founded in 1989 in Swindon Wiltshire as a consequence of Michael McInerney taking over the running of the May Kelly School

Continuing from dancing, Mike started teaching in 1989 and passed his teachers exam (T.C.R.G) in 1990. Within 2 years Mike passed his Adjudicators exam (A.D.C.R.G).

Within his current role of Teacher and Adjudicator the following provides recent references

  • Adjudicator at the All Ireland Championships, for which you have to be voted by a panel of peers.

  • Mike achieved top number of Votes in 2003

  • Adjudicator at North American National World Qualifiers, July 4th 2003

  • Adjudicator at the Canadian National World Qualifiers, Vancouver 2003

  • Adjudicator at Portland Oregon Feis (USA)

  • Adjudicator at Los Angeles ,Hollywood Feis, 2004 (USA)

  • Adjudication for British and Scottish National Feis

  • Adjudication for the First National Polish Irish Dance festival 2004

  • Adjudication at the National Feis in Sydney Australia July 2004

  • Mike also undertakes regular Irish Dance Workshops in Boston, USA

  • Adjudication at various local and regional Competition (Feis) within the British Isles, although it is worthwhile to note that often it is not possible to adjudicate at the major Feis because the Irish Dancing commission is very strict and do not allow Teachers to Judge own Students.

  • Mike has also coached two of his former pupils to become teachers with the T.C.R.G qualification.

The school has achieved notable successes, gaining a Boys British National Champion in 2003 and regularly achieving qualifiers and placing in the World Championships over the last few years. Some of the schools more recent achievements can be found on our Information pages.
